In late January 2010, New England Border Collie Rescue took in 4 border collies from a family that could no longer care for them. Two of the dogs, Ivy and Peat, had accidentally bred, and Ivy whelped February 17th. This is the blog for the pups.

Unofficial Hearing Test

We tried our unofficial hearing test on the pups on Friday night.  This test involves jingling keys behind a puppy.  The jingling keys don't give off vibrations that could be picked up by a deaf pup, and they are a novel sound that should attract a dog or puppies attention.  The pups are still young and we can't tell for certain yet if they are deaf, but this can give us an indication.

From out informal test, we did not seem to get a response from Dandelion or Berry.  We did seem to get a response from the other puppies.  We will continue to monitor.  This result is in keeping with our observations of the puppies and certainly wouldn't be a big surprise, as puppies with so much white are more likely to be deaf.  We will keep you posted!

If these 2 pups are deaf, it will not bother them at all - they will never have known any differently!  Puppies and dogs learn hand signals easier than they learn verbal cues anyway, and dogs are masters at reading body language.  So, the puppies won't care, and neither should their future parents!
